Prior to the opening of Red Maple Public School in September 2003, the following characteristics were identified by the school community as being most important:

- Positive role model who is friendly and supportive
- Kind, respectful, compassionate to all children
- Pro-active in getting resources – such as programs for before/after school and in-school related to sports, arts, etc
- Safety oriented
- Fair, Just
- Excellent communication skills
- Invites and promotes community involvement and establishes and maintains positive relationships with staff, students, parents, and the community.
The following qualities are also key to working in a tri-party facility:
- Able to work as a member of the Langstaff Discovery Centre Management Committee with partners (St. John Paul II Catholic School and the Town of Richmond Hill).
